What do you think about a proposed ban on smoking in public places such as restaurants, bars and workplaces?
As much as I hate government interfering with our lives, I love the smoking ban. Going out in Lawrence is so nice without smelling cigarette smoke at your table while eating.

Everyone concerned with the Bond issue should check out www.Eudoraschools.org and read through the information provided on the Bond Issue. It goes over the 45ml bond issue in detail, including on how your taxes are not going to 45ml, but to less than that due to state funding.
Those opposed need to stop spreading lies, and read this website. Get the answers directly and decide for yourself.
I have seen so many lies via the community forum, wasteful flyers and business owner gossip.
Check out the website and get the truth.

Will my taxes increase?
The district is responsible for the mill rate, which is just part of how property taxes are figured. If this bond passes, the district will not raise the mill rate for these projects.
However, if a property owner's assessed valuation goes up, it is likely that individual's property taxes will increase. It is important to note that any such increase would not be the result of the bond or any other district project, but rather, the result of increasing property values.

Taxes will go up either way, yes or no. It's a question of if your money will go to put band-aids on the old or build something for the future. Putting band-aids on the old will only work for so long, then we will need a real fix - and it will cost a lot more.
A friend dropped by with a flyer that was stuck in people's doors this week. Lots of misinformation - the people who wrote it were apparently so unsure of their "facts" that they didn't have the courage to put their name or names to it. What a bunch of rumour spreading, naysaying cowards. At least the folks out gathering support for the bond issue say who they are and where they get their information.

There is a public forum prior to the vote. The district is going out of it's way to answer questions, but many of the meetings they hold to inform the public are poorly attended. Go to these meetings, ask your questions, challenge Mr. Kobza and the board on their numbers and findings.
We have an immediate need in our buildings, this bond does not just focus on one building and then we'll have to ask for another bond down the road, this bond plans for our future and not only provides for the overcrowding but provides for our students and community with college level educational opportunities and vocational opportunities. We have to look at our futures and ways to make our students prepared for their futures.
The wonderful thing about our country is that you still have the right to vote anyway you would like. Make it an educated vote with the facts. Read the districts information and talk to the teachers, especially the teachers at Nottingham, and talk to and question the school board.

I did read one of the items regarding the bond. The new sports area. If natural grass is safer and better for the players, why doesnt the NFL change all of its feilds to turf? And really, how much does the field at Laws really get used??
greenman (anonymous) says…
Actually, field turf is safer and, over the long term is less expensive. The cost to properly maintain and paint/repaint a grass field is considerable. Bonner has field turf, many high schools and colleges are going to it. A field turf field could be used much more than grass, because of weather/wear and tear concerns. Because there is no crown, soccer can utilize the field as well. I know it sounds like an extravagent thing, however, looking at it over time it does make sense. Much like maint.free siding, more initially, less over time. To me, and lord knows there are many who disagree, this is responsible leadership by the administration and board. It is their job to look to the future. That's difficult, but it doesn't make it any less their job. It does make them easy targets for "Monday morning quarterbacks". I'm certainly not saying that their decisions are perfect, but I don't think that anyone on the board or in the administration sets out to make bad decisions for this community. Board and administration positions are thankless, completely thankless. People on here who think they are after "glory" are so far off the mark. Walk in their shoes, then complain. They defend every facet of this bond issue with logical arguments and projections and facts.

Again, no mention of why the NFL doesnt switch ALL feilds to turf??? The last I remember, is that they found turf to cause more injuries to the players. Does Eudora REALLY need this?? The type of field does not make the team any better or any worse. Everybody has to realize that the team will NOT also have the record they do this year. Heck, next year they could be 0- whatever.
greenman (anonymous) says…
There were certain type of artificial turf that caused injury - MU and a few other colleges had it and most of it has since been replaced. There are some pro teams that use artificial turf. Field turf is safer and more practical in the long run than the alternatives. I'm not trying to argue here, I'm saying what I know.

I'm curious on what everyone's priority is for the school bond if it had to be prioritized? Obviously, additional classroom space is top on the list. Also, what is everyone's comfort level for increasing taxes a month? When would you feel comfortable to voting yes?
DCCCC (anonymous) says…
I think priority is the kids education and classroom space. New school, no not needed. Fix up and add on.I will beat on doors and post signs to stop the bond in place now. After it fails, i will get deeply involved with the board to show them an idea to save and get what they want.We have ideas to do this , but some have tried at board meetings to get the board to go this direction with no help at all.We do not need a new school and realy dont need 26 acres, wow 26 acres, could build 3 schools on that land. Plus using up prime retail space on a main drag, (not smart) No teddy, i will help get a good bond passed, but not this one. If we can do it for an additional $100.00 a household per year, than that is acceptable i think. Kids are our future, but what good is a broke town in the future ? Please think about a NO VOTE and regroup for a smart Eudora School System.

The teacher's union has chosen to publicly back the Bond.

I am curious as to the plan that will need to be in place for refurbishing Nottingham over the summer months to fix the major plumbing concerns that set under the building along with removing the remaining asbestos and have the building operational again by the first of August for staff.
We cannot have that building be a major construction site while we have students moving in and out of the building.
Both playgrounds are designed for age appropriateness. We cannot combine the two. The class sizes are so large, we need the space for the students to spread out. Adding on to the north will take one of the playgrounds away.
Someone has also mentioned that parents should dress their kids appropriately for the weather concerns-like today. We agree, we also believe that parents should read every night with their children, practice flash cards, eat healthy meals, put the kids to bed early, etc. We all know that it just doesn't happen in some homes so we at school have to consider those students and their needs. We have lots of these kids, we can't just forget about them because they do not have the home life that we wish for them.
Just some more ideas to mull around and think of solutions for because we will need them if the bond doesn't pass.

Does anyone know the program that they are supposedly saying the state will pay 38% of the cost of the school. If this does not happen, our taxes WILL go up in a big way. I can't get an answer from anyone about the details on this to check it out and make sure we are not just being told that. I feel this is a huge key as to whether our taxes will go up or not. can anyone help me on this? It is not on the bond web site and I haven't gotten a straight answer from the board or district. Can someone else help dig on this to find answers?
