What do you think about a proposed ban on smoking in public places such as restaurants, bars and workplaces?
As much as I hate government interfering with our lives, I love the smoking ban. Going out in Lawrence is so nice without smelling cigarette smoke at your table while eating.

A. The proposed site for the school is more than an adequate distance from Cecil Monday's. The board of education has no intent or desire that Cecil Monday's would change or cease current operations. This was all determined prior to the selection of the site.
B. There is a contract on the land. It was contingent on passage of the bond and is in force now that the bond has passed.
C. The Durr home will be sold at auction to be moved or removed, at the purchaser's expense. This home was completely gutted and remodeled fewer than 10 years ago and is not being considered as a historic site in Kansas. As an aside, there are currently only 16 official Kansas Historic Sites (according to the KSHS website).
I'm confident this will stir the crap that is floating around out there, however, I feel like that the readers of this forum deserve to know the facts of the matter.
Back to the shadows.

Funny how Mr. Durr told me that he hasn't gotten a contract yet. I spoke to him on Tuesday. Even the school board said at their meeting on Thursday the 8th, that they could now move forward with getting the contracts signed, and issuing some bonds, and starting the final process to get the projects ready to bid. The even stated that bids would be going out sometime in January or February. But I guess greenman knows everybody's business, since he is the forum president. Don't pay any attention to the minutes of these meetings or talk to the people involved, because president greenman knows all the facts already.

I was in contact with a judge today and i will know next week if the order to stop all work within 500 ft will be issued. Gutted or not the home is still of interest to the KHS and a private party is looking into the history of it now. A 120 day stay is what we are after to give the KHS enough time to meet with the party who is researching the facts on the home. In the end it will only cut about 22 acres off the total land purchase , leaving plenty for the new school to sit on.(g man,) the story you get from the board is not exact and somewhat jaded, so be careful what you take to heart. The KBOE was unaware of a bar being less than 1000 ft away from the location of the proposed school, when i contacted them. They thought that was interesting to know. I also let them know about land farther to the north and a better location, less money as well.

E. four months into the school year an the teachers and board still do not have a contract. I am glad that this district has its priorities straight. Ironic that the Eudora News made no mention of this fact as the election approached. Small town politics are just as good as the big boys.

It is pretty sad that they want this new , pretty , huge uneeded school, but dont want to keep the great, awesome teachers we have now. Maybe they figure they will leave and can hire cheaper ones since after this bond passed the thought of a mill rate rise will pis- off an entire district .Lots of fun times are ahead for us and our teachers.Yes our board is now in a place that nobody will like soon.Huge mill rate increases and taxation like no other district in a 20 state area. Can,t wait to see some yesser homes go up on the auction block in the next few years. We are headed for the tax increase of the century.

The teachers are dismayed about no contract, but most especially those at Nottingham are celebrating the fact that this town chose to vote yes for the bond and they will soon be in a building that will be an outstanding learning environment for all involved. If you really care for this town's teachers and their working conditions-stop working against the bond and what this town voted for. Stop posting continuous negative comments and work with those involved to get the building up and running, settle the contracts, and attract new residents by being positive and supportive of what the town chose to do. The negativity on this forum will keep some from moving to Eudora-both residents and business opportunities!

It looks like to me that it's getting too expensive to move to Eudora anyway. If you want to use the school system, all you have to do is pay the $100 out of district fee and bring your kids here anyway. Lots of parents from Lawrence and other towns are doing that now, and they don't have the enormous taxes to pay. I'm embarrassed by our school board, build buildings with an open checkbook, but, make your employees work without a contract. How much more disrespectful can you get? Just give them what they want, they deserve it, they all already underpaid.
SteveParker (anonymous) says…
They don't even want that much. Just something on par with the percentage amount that was given to the current administartion way back during the summer months.
Problem is, it is an administrator that runs the board rather than the other way around. Honestly, I am not sure what purpose the board serves since they can rarely make decisions on their own.

E eyes ) You got it. We as citizens are getting screwed over by the board. We pay one of the highest tax rates in the entire midwest and our board is only concerned about adding another school, moving the awesome sports field and enticing students from out of district. If we at leats got some vasoline first it might not hurt so bad. Our school board has managed to destroy any hope of our citizens of getting even a minute tax break and has totaly put our teachers on the back burner. I can not believe the yessers have allowed this to happen and even more suprised the teachers have not walked out. Face the fact teachers, your not getting more pay and the board doesn,t give a crap about you. They used you to pass the bond and lead you to believe something will come of it.You were pawns just like many others. You might see a raise in 2009 after they beg and beg the state to allow them to pluck more money from all the citizens and raise the mill rate again.Fact, teachers wont get a raise and we the citizens are going to be so overtaxed that nobody making under $100.000.00 a year will be able to stay living in Eudora. It will be a 100% bedroom comunity, thats going to suck, but it is a fact. The average yearly income in Eudora is now at $52.000.00 a year and is dropping about $1.200.00 a year for the last 5 years.Disposable income is down 67% over the last 3 years.Tax rates have gone up 38% in the last 4 years. The numbers dont lie.

These people that pay $100 to bring there kids from Lawrence to Eudora schools, are kind of missing the point. If your child doesn't live in the same town that they attend school, what sense of community can they have? Our kids grow up with the same kids that they go to school with. They have been together since Miss Monica's preschool. Our kids are growing up with the kids of the people, that we went to school with. They spend summers together at the pool, and going to the CPA Picnic. Their first grade teacher, and principal attend their weddings. They attend church together. These are the ties that bind. And when our kids have all grown up, and gone away to college, or to start their lives elsewhere, these are the times they will remember. If we're lucky, they will return with their kids, and do it all over again....The cost may be high, but the payback may be greater.

minnie3, I think the point eudoraeyes was making is that people don't HAVE to pay our taxes to attend our schools. I have to disagree with you on some of your points though. My kids never went to preschool anywhere, but they do just fine in school, and a LOT of their friends are from neighboring towns. They also do not and will not attend the pool, people have their own conception about pools, but personally I think they are nasty places for germs and contaminates, no matter how many chemicals they dump in them. I have lived here for 38 years, and very few of us that went to school hung out together, we usually would hang out with the kids from Lawrence and DeSoto. However, that was when all the farm kids and such would hang out and do things together, we would have parking lots FULL of cars in town on Friday and Saturday night and just hang out and visit with each other. Now, kids in Eudora can't afford to hang out and cruise around because gas is so expensive, but even if they did, some police officer would run them off, because they are not allowed to just hang out anywhere anymore. Our town is dying from lack of money and lack of interest in creating something for our kids to do. Why would any teenage kid hang out in Eudora when there's nothing here for them. If you look around and observe, you will find that our high school kids, actually know as many or more kids from Lawrence than they do from Eudora.

i have 2 kids both in high school, you are correct boss when you say this town has nothing for our kids. most of the taxpayers have been in this town for many years, i cant believe the city councils lack of promoting new buisness, especially ones geared towards our teens.the future of this community lies in their hands, in a few years they also will be taxpayers and i dont see many of them with the desire to settle and raise their families here.
MoneyWatch (anonymous) says…
Eudora has become a birds nest. Raise the young and then they go away. We are now a bedroom community with not much to offer them. With the new school bond the tax break that would have been is now gone. The old bonds dropping off would have free,d up not less than $60.00 per month for most households. Now that that is gone, we won,t see any new businesses come or will we be able to spend a few extra bucks doing something with our kids.I just dont think the board see,s what is happening to our town.It is sad to see our town get into the shape it is in.The cost to live in Eudora is out of reach to most now.Not many people now can afford to buy a home here and survive.Who ever thought it would cost $2.200.00 a year tax,s on a $130.000.00 home in Eudora Kansas. We are now 28% higher than even Lawrence.sad sad deal.I know many are going to sell and move soon, if they can dump there houses.
teddy (anonymous) says…
MoneyWatch - where did you get the 28% higher than Lawrence figure? I'd like to look into that.
minnie3 (anonymous) says…
I was referring to younger kids that don't drive yet. If the parents want to drive them to other towns everytime the child needs to be entertained, then that's great. And I wasn't inferring that children need to attend preschool. When you only have one child, they need to be around other kids. Preschool was an avenue for that interaction. I know families that have kids in school in Lawrence, Olathe, home schoolers, private schools, all kinds of schools. They live in Eudora. So essentially they are still paying the taxes here, but taking their kids out of town for school. A lot of options these days.

MoneyWatch, I have just spent a considerable amount of time on the Douglas County website checking the value and tax information for homes in Lawrence like mine. What I found doesn't come close to what you are saying. Eudora does pay more in mills than Lawrence, however in comparing the valuation of my home with a similar (sq ft & style) home, Lawrence values are $5 - $10,000 more than my Eudora home (on the east and south sides, not the more pricy western area). So, I actually pay less for my home in Eudora than I would in the very same home located in Lawrence! I tried calculating every way I could think of and never came close to your 28% figure. Can you please explain? Where do you get your figures?
Eudorkie (anonymous) says…
Oh, and by the way, Baldwin's mills are 125, DeSoto's mills are 132, Edgerton = 164, Gardner = 134. Just thought you might like to know. These all came off official county websites. (Eudora's is 124)

He gets them the same place that he got the idea that taxes will be raised $54/month with the new school bond...out of thin air.
