Eudora Jaycees help make Christmas memorable

December 7, 2000

One special thing about Eudora is the number of charity programs organized by its residents. Every week in December, The Eudora News will publish a list of contributors to Eudora Cares, a special fund set up to support community charities. Last week, we profiled the Mayor`s Christmas Tree Fund. This week, we look at the Eudora Jaycees` Adopt a Family. Please support any of these worthy philanthropic efforts by sending checks to: Eudora Cares, c/o The Eudora News, 1402-B Church St., Eudora, KS, 66025.

Every year, the Eudora Jaycees makes one family`s Christmas memorable. Adopt a Family, in its fourth year, is a program that provides a holiday meal, Christmas presents and wrapping paper for one needy family. The Jaycees selects the family through connections with local non-profit groups, and the adopted family is confidential to everyone except the committee chairman.

Bill Folks, last year`s Adopt a Family chairman for the Jaycees, said there`s nothing like delivering the presents to the adopted family.

"The gratitude the families show makes it worth all the effort," Folks said. "Seeing the look on the parent`s face and you know how much this means."

The Jaycees set aside money every year for Adopt a Family from fund-raisers. In December, Jaycees go to area stores asking for help in supporting the program through cash donations, or donated or discounted products. After the family has been selected, the chairman contacts the parent to find out the number of children to buy for and clothing sizes and needs.

When the Adopt a Family committee has collected everything, the committee chairman arranges a time to deliver the presents when the children aren`t home. The Jaycees also bring wrapping paper so the parents first get to see what the kids got, and can wrap the presents themselves. Folks said the twinkle in the eyes of past recipients is what he`ll remember about delivering the presents.

"It chokes you up to know how much they need help and to be able to give a little," he said. "That`s what the season is all about -- giving a little help."

If you`re interested in supporting Adopt a Family, please drop your donations off to The Eudora News office at 1402-B Church St. The Jaycees will be collecting donations for the family until December 16.
