Winans meets with board; Johnson elected president

July 27, 2000

The Eudora School Board welcomed new superintendent David Winans last Thursday and elected new officers for the 2000-2001 school term.

At his first meeting with the board, Winans said he felt comfortable with the amount of interest he has been shown concerning Eudora students.

"I've had a wonderful time meeting people from the community and the staff," Winans said. "All of the enthusiasm and genuine interest in kids and Eudora education has been there from everybody."

The board began the new fiscal school year with presidential and vice presidential elections. The Board president for 1999-2000 was Mark Chrislip and vice president was Marion Johnson. This year, the board voted Johnson as president and Chrislip as vice president.

The board also continued discussion on using a construction manager for completition of a new high school, should the issue get to the planning and development stage. A construction manager would oversee all aspects of development, remaining at the job site 100 percent of the time.

Chrislip said he wondered if discussing plans for a construction manager was premature, but Winans disagreed. Winans said by settling the problem now, it may offset some potential raised emotions as a bond issue nears.

"I think it's not premature," Winans said. "I think the closer you get to a discussion over building a new building, the more emotional it gets."

Board member Kenny Massey said he had discussed construction managers with workers who built the new Douglas County jail, and learned it was a great help to its construction.

Board member Bob Rice said he fully supported the idea of using a construction manager.

"I made no bones about it that I think we need a construction manager from the get go," Rice said.

The board passed a unanimous motion for Winans to contract three construction managers firms to receive presentations and cost proposals.

During the meeting, the board:

approved provisional employment for five positions within the district.

approved a head secretary stipend for the district secretary position.

reviewed a listing of vacancies for the 2000-2001 school term.
