Man found with self-inflicted gunshot wound
A Johnson County man was found wounded from an apparent gunshot wound to the head Tuesday morning outside Eudora.
Passersby discovered Mike Bjortvedt, a 24-year-old from Overland Park, in a field in Weaver Bottoms, 1 1/4 miles northeast of Eudora. Representatives from the Douglas County Sheriff's department, Eudora Medical Services and Eudora police assisted Bjortvedt, who was flown by helicopter to Overland Park Regional Medical Center. A nursing supervisor from the hospital said he was listed in serious condition.
Douglas County Sheriff's Lieutenant Mike Suitt said Bjortvedt was found approximately 15 feet from his car in a nearby cornfield.
"From what I understand he's going to live; I don't know how," Suitt said.
Suitt said authorities were notified by two teenagers on their way to fish in the area. Their names were not released.
"Our officers got there around 6 a.m.," Suitt said. "I honestly don't know how long he was out there before he was found."
