Robert Edward Beer

Private inurnment services for Robert Edward Beer, 82, Lawrence, will be at Pioneer Cemetery, Lawrence.

Mr. Beer died Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2001, at Eudora Nursing Center.

He was born April 28, 1919, in Los Angeles, the son of Charles Robert and Jessie (Pearson) Beer. He received his undergraduate, graduate and doctorate degrees from the University of California.

Mr. Beer moved in 1950 to Lawrence from Berkeley, Calif., and began teaching at Kansas University. He was a professor in the department of entomology from 1950 until he retired in 1988. He served as the chairman of department for many years and also had been the state entomologist in Kansas for several years. He taught summer school for 15 years at the University of Michigan's Biological Station and for five years at the University of Minnesota's Biological Station.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Corps.

He married Margaret Robey April 6, 1941, in Las Vegas. She survives of Lawrence.

Other survivors include a daughter, Kathleen Margaret Beer, Lawrence.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice Care of Douglas County, and they may be sent in care of Warren McElwain Mortuary, which is handling arrangements.
