Cardinal grapplers post wins in tournament, duals
It was a good week for Eudora High School wrestlers.
The Cardinals came away with victories in a double dual match Thursday against Central Heights and Gardner-Edgerton and a tournament in Louisburg over the weekend.
The team easily won the match against Central Heights by a score of 60-6. Gardner-Edgerton didn't give the team much more competition as the Cardinals walked away with a 66-15 victory.
Brett Becker (140), Luke Powers (145) and Zac Hamlin (189) each pinned their Central Heights opponents. Sam Campbell (130) and Jason Marmon (275) pinned their Gardner-Edgerton opponents to the mat.
The Cardinals placed second among the eight teams competing in the Louisburg tournament. Spring Hill took first in the contest.
Eudora coach Ron Abel said nine of his 11 wrestlers placed in the tournament.
First place finishers included Becker, Mike Paxton (215) and Brian Harris (135).
Dustin Crowe (125), Campbell, Powers, Hamlin and Marmon finished second in their weight classes.
James Barr took third place in the 160-pound division.
Following the wins, Abel said he felt good about the direction his team was heading.
"We're performing pretty well right now," he said.
The wrestlers will have to do even better if they hope to come away with a win at this weekend's tournament at Basehor-Linwood High School, he added.
"It's going to be a competitive tournament," he said. "There will be teams coming in from all across the state and even a few from Iowa."
The tournament gets underway at 1 p.m. Friday and continues Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening.
