Eudora’s own little leaguers take top winnings

July 12, 2001

It was all Eudora at this weekend's Big 4, 11-12-year-old baseball tournament.

Eudora teams swept the top three spots, knocking off squads from De Soto, Wellsville, Baldwin and Louisburg in the 12-team tourney played here.

Morgan Abel, a member of the Eudora Blue team, took this pitch to
center for an RBI single in the top of the third in the
championship game of the 11-and-12-year-old Big 4 League Tournament
over the weekend. He also pitched the 11-2 victory.

Morgan Abel, a member of the Eudora Blue team, took this pitch to center for an RBI single in the top of the third in the championship game of the 11-and-12-year-old Big 4 League Tournament over the weekend. He also pitched the 11-2 victory.

The Eudora Blue team, coached by Mark Salmans and Ron Abel, won four consecutive contests to claim the championship, downing previously unbeaten league champion Eudora Red 10-0 Saturday night and Eudora Maroon 11-2 for the first-place trophies Sunday.

For the tourney, the winning Blue squad outscored its opponents 41-12.

In Sunday's championship game on the sun-drenched youth field, the Blue team got on the board early.

Hits by Kent Abel and Michael Ortega, coupled with a sacrifice by Jared Botello, resulted in two runs in the first. A single by Matthew Abel, a bunt by Kent Abel and an Ortega sacrifice netted three more scores in the second frame.

Cousins Morgan Abel and Kent Abel combined to drive in five runs in the next two innings, helped by hits from Mary Braught and Todd Roberts.

In addition to his double that drove in two runs in the fourth, Morgan Abel went the distance on the mound for the championship victory, allowing only four hits.

Jared Reetz, Max Alvarez, Jake Winkler and Alexander Rushmeyer provided the hits for Maroon Eudora, a team that fought its way back in the loser's bracket and played three games Sunday. They were sent to the loser's bracket by the Eudora Red team, the league champion, but the Maroon team came back with a 9-5 win over the Red team to vie for first place in the tourney.

Victory was also sweet for the Blue team since it avenged both of its regular season losses in the tournament by beating Wellsville-1 and Eudora Red.

The opener Friday night against Wellsville-1 was the closest contest for Eudora Blue. Eudora jumped ahead 7-2 after three frames but faltered in the bottom of the third allowing four Wellsville runs. Roberts smacked an inside-the-park home run up the left field line to lead off the fifth and final frame, and Morgan Abel struck out the side in relief to hold on for an 8-6 win.

Botello was the winning pitcher against Wellsville, and he went all five frames to claim the 10-0 shutout victory over Eudora Blue on Saturday night. Botello allowed only three hits and all of those hitters were caught while attempting to steal. For the tournament, 10 runners were caught off base by Eudora Blue, eight gunned down by the arm of catcher Michael Ortega.

Catches by outfielders Matthew McPeek and Roberts also helped keep Eudora Blue at bay.

Against the Red team, Blue got a run in the first on a base hit by Ortega, after Botello walked, and a run in the second when D.J. Fritzel was hit by a pitch and came around to score on stolen bases.

Ortega added three more RBIs in the third and fourth, following a Botello triple and hits by Cody Hickock and Kent Abel to make it 6-0.

Time ran out in the fifth inning but not before hits by Roberts, Mason Salmans, Hickock, Kent Abel and Botello added four more scores.

Eudora Blue also beat De Soto-3 earlier on Saturday.
