Eudora chess teams compete in Wichita

Chess teams from Eudora High School and Eudora Middle School traveled to Wichita last weekend to compete in the Class 4-A State Tournament.

The high school team placed ninth out of 31 schools and the middle school team placed 11th out of 27.

Austin Roberts was the top finisher for the high school, placing 23rd out of more than 175 competitors.

Jared Pringle placed right behind Roberts in 24th place. Also competing on the high school team was Chris Gabriel, Brandon Werst, Jeffery Jones, Bart Carroll, Seth Pittman, Jesse Murphy, Troy Van Horn, William Steele and Ashley Frost.

The middle school team finsihed 11th out of 27 teams.

Frank Male was the top finisher for the middle school, placing 30th out of 136 competitors.

Other junior high students competing were: Jesie Stout, Craig Elmer, Andy Coffman, Guy Montgomery and Matt Morgan.

EMS coach Dan Kuhlman said he was proud of how the students competed and of how they have improved throughout the year.

"The kids did a great job. I was really proud of them and appreciated how much they've worked on their games and have improved through the year."

The students will now prepare for the Supernationals, Battle of the Minds April 26-29 in Kansas City.
