Gilbert R. Bracken
Services for Gilbert R. "Gib" Bracken, 95, Independence, will be at 10 a.m. Nov. 15 at the United Methodist Church, Sycamore. Burial will be at Mount Hope Cemetery, Independence.
Mr. Bracken died Friday, Nov. 9, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 12, 1906, in Howard, the son of Jordan A. and Mary Ellen (Craig) Bracken.
He moved to the Sycamore and Independence area in 1916 and lived there until 1996, except for a short time when he worked in the Illinois oilfields and the shipyards in Washington during World War II. He worked as a welder for 30 years at Universal Atlas Cement, Independence, until he retired. He also had been a farmer.
Mr. Bracken married Lillian M. Bolt June 4, 1930, in Sycamore. They lived in Junction City from 1996 to 1998. She died May 9, 1999.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Sycamore, Radical Grange, AARP, Neewollah Campers and the Cement, Lime and Gypsum Workers Local 109, where he had served as president. Mr. Bracken also had served on the Sycamore Township board and was a trustee of the Sycamore Township Hall.
Survivors include three sons, Bill Bracken, Lasalle, Colo., Gary Bracken, Evans, Colo., and Lyle Bracken, Linwood; a sister, Rose Graham, Scottsdale, Ariz.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
A son, Larry Kent, died earlier.
