George E. Powell

Graveside services for George E. Powell, 57, Baldwin, were Friday, Aug. 31, at St. John's Cemetery north of Worden.

Mr. Powell died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001.

He was born Oct. 3, 1944, in Lawrence, the son of Aloysius N. and Josephine M. (Kerr) Powell. He grew up in the Vinland area, attending grade school there before attending Lawrence schools.

He worked in construction before becoming owner and operator of Powell Excavating.

Mr. Powell was a member of St. John's Church of Christ in rural Douglas County. He coached softball for several years in the Baldwin area.

He married Mary Lewis on July 18, 1976, in Atchison. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Lorie Powell, of the home; two brothers, Bill Powell, Carbondale, and John Powell, Vassar; and five sisters, Betty Chalender, Linwood, Rosemary Robinson, Ottawa, and Judy Johanning, Darlene Schwarz and Dorothy Johanning, all of Baldwin.

The family suggests memorials to the Lorie Powell Education Fund, sent in care of Lamb-Roberts-Heise Funeral Home, P.O. Box 64, Baldwin 66006.
