Services for Richard "Chuck" Allen, 67, Flandreau, S.D., were Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Eastman Hall, Flandreau, S.D.
Mr. Allen died Saturday, Jan. 12, 2002, at Sioux Valley Hospital.
He was born Jan. 19, 1934, in Flandreau, S.D., the son of Raymond and Laverne (Redwing) Allen. He attended Flandreau Public School.
Mr. Allen entered the U.S. Army Feb. 22, 1952, and served during the Korean Conflict until his discharge on Feb. 27, 1954.
He attended auto mechanics school in Chicago and returned to Flandreau in 1960 and worked for the South Dakota Highway Department. He then worked at the boys dorm at the Flandreau Indian School until 1967. He worked for the Papago Indian Reservation in Sells, Ariz., from 1967-1969. He then worked as a boiler operator at FIS until 1975.
Mr. Allen moved to Eudora and worked at the Haskell Indian School as a heating equipment mechanic until his retirement in 1990. He returned to Flandreau in 1993.
He served as maintenance director for the Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe and was Tribal Chairman from 1994-1998.
Mr. Allen was a member of the housing and gaming commissions and a member and former elder of the First Presbyterian Church.
He married Sally Mehlhoff on March 7, 1959, in Flandreau. She survives of the home.
Other survivors include a daughter, Julie Allen, Flandreau, S.D.; three sons, Richard Allen, Victor Allen and Mark Allen, all of Flandreau, S.D.; five brothers, Thomas Allen, Flandreau; Pete Allen, Maple Plain, Minn.; and Sam Allen, Clifford Allen and Howie Allen, all of Flandreau; four sisters, Darlene Bernard, Judy Allen, Lavonne "Bunny" Allen, and Cindy Allen, all of Flandreau; and six grandchildren.
His parents and a brother preceded him in death.
Skroch Funeral Chapel, Flandreau, S.D., was in charge of arrangements.
