Mayor Conner’s priority list more than counting

March 21, 2002

Last month, Eudora Mayor Ron Conner produced the top five priorities on his promised top-10 list. In a Feb. 16 speech to the Eudora Chamber of Commerce, Conner said his top-five priorities were:

completion of the city/county Winchester Road paving and improvement project.

widening Church Street from K-10 south to the high school with either a central turn lane or two additional lanes.

paving 20th Street to connect Church Street with Winchester Road.

identifying a site for another major city park.

improving the downtown retail base with the help of a Kansas Department of Housing and Commerce grant.

We find Conner's list a thoughtful set of priorities that validates the exercise as more than a throw-away Late Show concept. When we reminded the mayor his list was overdue, we felt vision and leadership were needed to keep the city livable and affordable in the face of explosive growth.

The proposed Church Street project and a new park should provide stress relief. Paving 20th Street and investment in downtown would help attract the retail development needed to offset the demand for services brought by new rooftops.

Conner has our attention. At the risk of offending Councilman Tom Pyle, whose comments suggest we established Conner's agenda by reminding him of his promise, we would like to see the five remaining items on his list.
