At 6 p.m. on a recent Tuesday, the KGDC gym in Olathe is buzzing with activity, with the youngest gymnasts doing sit-ups in one corner while others run and tumble on the squishy mats that cover the floor. But none of this activity distracts Eudora Middle School student Melissa Fernandez as she leaps and poses on the balance beam with poise.

It will be business as usual for the USD 491 Board of Education when new terms begin July 1. All four incumbents running were voted back onto the school board Tuesday night.

Off-duty Lawrence firefighter John Dines places handcuffs on Eudoran Lynda Wilson, who was “arrested” Thursday afternoon at Casey’s General Store where she is manager. The Muscular Dystrophy Association “charged” Wilson with having a big heart as part of its fund-raising campaign, which had about 200 people in Douglas County paying “bail” money to end their sentence in a Lawrence restaurant.
