Kansas Press Association honors The Eudora News with awards
The Eudora News was recognized Saturday by the Kansas Press Association at its annual state conference. The News received first places for best use of photos and sports pages; second places for editorial pages, news and writing excellence, and Web site; and honorable mentions for best front page and general excellence.
Former sports reporter Michael Sudhalter, who currently works at the Carthage (Mo.) Press, took first place in sports column writing and second places in sports feature writing and feature package.
Former photographer Roger Nomer, who now works for the Johnson County Sun, earned third place in photo illustration and honorable mention in sports photography.
Reporter Erinn R. Barcomb earned second places in religion and youth coverage; third places in government and youth coverage and in feature package; and honorable mentions in series writing and feature package.
Pieces that won awards included: a feature about native Eudoran and former Kansas State basketball player Jeff Simons; a news feature about former USD 491 superintendent and gubernatorial candidate Dan Bloom; a photograph of high-jumper Jenny Durkin; and an opinion page including an editorial commending Eudora and Douglas County workers for their service during severe winter weather.
The News' editor is Elvyn J. Jones, and the general manager is Theresa Abel. Michele Cleveland is office assistant, and Quinn Gregg is the advertising representative. The News' new sports reporter is Adam Hooker.
