Ovyd “Leroy” Torneden

Graveside services for Ovyd "Leroy" Torneden, 63, Lawrence, were Wednesday, Jan. 15, at Pleasant Grove Cemetery south of Lawrence.

Mr. Torneden died Sunday, Jan. 12, 2003, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

He was born June 18, 1939, in Winchester, the son of Ernest Edward and Dorothy Geraldine (Cline) Torneden. He was a 1958 graduate of Linwood High School.

He retired in 1993 as a store clerk at Checkers Foods. He previously had worked for S&W Grocery, L&M Grocery, Jones Farm Supply and Bailey's Farm and Home Supply.

Mr. Torneden was a member of Holiday Hills Church of the Nazarene and attended Douglas County Senior Center.

He married Verna A. Smith on July 4, 1968, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two daughters, Tammie Torneden, Pomona, and Shanda Torneden, of the home; a brother, Daniel Torneden, Lawrence; two sisters, Dora Charlene Bussart, Oskaloosa, and Terry Layn Torneden, Eudora; and six stepgrandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Douglas County Senior Services Inc., 745 Vt., Lawrence 66044.

Lawrence Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
