The Midwest Rebels are a unique concoction of 15- and 16-year-old boys from Eudora, Baldwin and Lawrence. The merging of these fierce rivals into summer chums is not an easy assignment. Although Rebels manager John Griffin and his coaching staff — Dirk Kinney, Brian Ash and Phil Hannon — have done just that.

The Eudora boys got back on the hardwood with coach Scott Stein last Monday during the week-long Super D camp. The girls, though, have been spending their Monday nights with coach Stein for a while now.

Although local firefighters and law enforcement officers oversee fireworks use in Eudora each year, this week they’ll have special concerns. Because Lawrence has banned fireworks in its city limits, some fear Eudora’s leniency with fireworks will draw celebrants — and carelessness — to the city.
