City Council names new rec director
Eudora has a new parks and recreation director, who will start Monday.
At the Sept. 22 meeting, the Eudora City Council approved an appointment by Mayor Ron Conner to hire Robert Arnold Jr. for the position, which had been vacant since this summer. Former parks and recreation director Dianna Beebe was not re-appointed to the position she'd had for several years.
"I've struggled with this; we've struggled with this," Conner said of making an appointment.
He said some on the Council had been pulling for another candidate.
"I really feel who I'm recommending is the director to head the department," Conner said.
A Kansas University graduate, Arnold has a bachelor's degree in education with an emphasis in sports management. He has worked with the Kansas City Sports Commission and Foundation, as well as with parks and recreation departments in Lawrence and Mission.
According to a memo from the city, Arnold is experienced in sports field maintenance, adult and youth sports, tournament and special events coordination, and supervising staff and volunteers.
Council members Scott Hopson and Tom Pyle voted against the mayor's recommendation. Pyle said he didn't think the mayor was recommending the best person for the job, adding he felt more strongly about a candidate's connection to the city than such things as computer skills.
"I'd like to have somebody I think has been around here a few years and who will stay a few years," Pyle said.
Arnold currently lives in Overland Park but told the city he intended to move to Eudora.
