James C. Schmitz Sr.

Services with military honors for James C. "Bud" Schmitz Sr., 82, Lawrence, will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home. Burial will be in Eudora Cemetery.
Mr. Schmitz died Sunday, Feb. 1, 2004, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.
He was born June 4, 1921, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Joseph Martin and Cloey May (Clevenger) Schmitz.
Mrs. Schmitz was a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He received five campaign medals, five bronze stars and a good conduct medal; he served in the Normandy, northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. He played semi-pro baseball for 12 years and served as a baseball umpire. He was a printer for the Lawrence Journal-World for 34 years.
He had served as mayor of Sibleyville in rural Douglas County. He was a member of American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 and Alford-Clarke Post No. 852, Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He married Pauline W. Withers on March 28, 1942, in Bonner Springs. She died July 22, 1988.
Survivors include three sons, Jim Schmitz Jr., and Jack Schmitz, both of Lawrence, and Joe Schmitz, Columbia, Mo.; a sister, Frances Summers, Excelsior Springs, Mo.; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
