Township firefighters opening doors to visitors Saturday

June 24, 2004

Part of 20th Street will become a landing strip Saturday as the Eudora Township Fire Department puts on a free safety fair and open house. The road will be closed from the fire station to Broers Automotive for air ambulances scheduled to visit the fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Drivers will be rerouted to Winchester Road.
Visitors can get an up-close look at helicopters from the likes of LifeStar as well as vehicles from local fire departments and the Eudora Police Department during the event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Eudora Township Fire Department, 310 E. 20th St.
Township firefighter Sue Coleman said the fair would include visits from Douglas County dispatchers and personnel from Eudora EMS and Lawrence Fire and Medical.
Eudora Police officer Chris Casagrande will have a station set up for child safety seat inspections. Each inspection takes about 20 minutes. Parents are asked to bring the car seat and any instructions with which it came.
This year, Coleman said visitors would be offered free food and beverages between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Children will have a chance to win prizes and give-aways, as well as hang out at a coloring station and crawl through a maze simulating a fire situation. Coleman saidthe maze had been revamped since last year's fair.
The safety fair, Coleman said, allowed visitors to see what services the township fire department had to offer besides putting out fires and responding to calls.
For example, firefighters can conduct home inspections through which they run through a fire escape plan with the household and check the home for safety components. Firefighters can also be called on to check in on senior citizens in extreme summer temperatures.
The fair also provided a way to advertise the need for volunteers. Coleman said applications would be available Saturday. Volunteers must live or work in the city of Eudora or Eudora Township, and they must be at least 18-years-old with a good driving record.
For more information about the fair or the volunteer firefighter application process, call the department at 542-2800.
