Eudora High School choral groups and soloists advance to state competition

April 14, 2005

Eudora High School's vocal music groups have another reason to sing after last week's successful performances at the Regional Solo and Ensemble Festival at Baker University in Baldwin.

The competition took place Saturday, and Eudora students made a strong showing.

Angela Yarnell leads the choir in practice. Yarnell has been a
choir teacher at Eudora High School for three years.

The EHS men's ensemble and the two women's choirs, Belle Chanson and Cantorei, each received superior ratings at the festival, which sends them on to the state competition later this month in Andover.

The boys sang "Think on Me" for their performance. Belle Chanson sang "Non Nobis Domine," and Cantorei sang "Lass from the Low Country" and "Sam was a Man."

Paul Chaffin, Joe Kaup, Anne Cherry and Amanda Gordon were also given a superior rating for their quartet performance of "The Cloths of Heaven." They will also go on to perform in their small ensemble at the state festival.

Soprano soloist Johanna Rahmqvist was given the nod of approval for her performances of "Les Berceaux" and "This Little Rose," for which she received superior ratings. She, too, will perform the pieces in state competition.

Only musicians who received superior ratings advance to state. It's the first time everyone who participated from Eudora High School will get to move on to the state level for at least one event. Several participants qualified in two categories.

The students give the credit to their teacher, Angela Yarnell.

"Ever since Ms. Yarnell has been here we've gotten a lot more awards," junior Amanda Gordon said.

Many of the singers have participated in choir for years. Some say being a part of choir is a big part of who they are.

"It's an engrained part of our lives," senior Kara Pittman said.

Senior Brandon Kurtz has participated in choral competition on the state level before and is hoping for a great performance to remember after high school.

"I'm looking forward to us getting a superior at state for our senior year," he said.

Soloists who received Excellent ratings were Brittany Pittman (soprano), Chadwyn Waln (baritone), Kirk Berridge (tenor), and Kara Pittman (alto).

The Chamber Choir and Larissa Maranell and Tabitha Welsh each earned Good ratings.
