Eudora mayor will not seek re-election

January 11, 2005

In a statement released Monday, Eudora Mayor Ron Conner announced he would not seek re-election.

Conner said he had intended to file to run for re-election but recent responsibilities in his full-time employment have required him to spend considerable time working out of town and away from the city. He said the possibility exists that job responsibilities will continue to require him to be away from the city for extended periods of time.

"Therefore, after much consideration, I have come to the decision that I will not be submitting my name to be placed on the ballot for re-election as your Mayor," Conner said in the statement.

"I feel that it is not fair to you, the citizens of Eudora, for me to seek re-election knowing that I may not be as available as I should be to fulfill the responsibilities of the office."

Conner said he is hopeful that someone in the community who has an eye to the future will step forward as a candidate to run for election to the office.

"I would like to thank the Citizens of Eudora for the opportunity of serving as your Mayor for the past four years," Conner said. "I will always consider it a great honor to have earned your trust to fulfill the responsibilities of the office."

In addition to the mayoral position, the Council positions currently held by Rex Burkhardt and Don Durkin expire this spring.

The filing deadline for the April 5 election is noon Jan. 25. If necessary, a primary election is scheduled for March 1.

In addition to the city positions, the terms of two Eudora Board of Education members -- Carlie Abel and Brenda Clark -- will expire.

A candidate must be a registered voter in Eudora and may file by paying a fee of $5 or by submitting a petition signed by 25 qualified electors in Eudora. It is suggested that at least 15 extra signatures be collected.

If filing by petition, time should be allowed prior to the filing deadline for verification of signatures, according to a statement from the office of the Douglas County Clerk.

Potential candidates can obtain information at Eudora City Hall, 4 East Seventh St., or at the Douglas County Courthouse, 1100 Massachusetts St. in Lawrence. Candidates may file at either location.
