Take interest in City

January 27, 2005

I did not file for re-election to the Eudora City Council or for the position of mayor for a couple of reasons. It's time for me to take a break and devote some time to my personal and professional life. A lot of personal time and energy has been placed in city, recreation and planning commission meetings, League of Kansas Municipalities conferences and training sessions, meetings with county and state officials (which most members of the governing body did not attend), hearings for the Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant disposal and K-10 Corridor meetings, sometimes using vacation time to attend the above.
I am concerned that Eudora will have an inexperienced council with members who may not be familiar with the state of the city. At some point in time, Eudora citizens need to attend more council meetings, become involved in the issues and, more importantly, in the answers to the issues.
I intend to stay close to City of Eudora politics and hope to return to political office in the future. Thanks to all of you who supported me in what could be called the most controversial and political eight years in Eudora's 148-year history.
Good luck and best wishes go to those who are willing to dedicate four years of their personal life for the good of the Eudora community. Please keep in mind in all your decisions and policies, you are representing the people of Eudora. I would hate to think elected officials could press issues from which our elected officials could benefit.
Rex Burkhardt
Eudora City Councilman
