Mildred E. Lackey

Mass of Christian Burial for Mildred E. Lackey, 83, Seneca, was Wednesday, Nov. 16, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Seneca, with the Revs. Mike Koller and Richard McDonald officiating. Burial was in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery.
Mrs. Lackey died Sunday, Nov. 13, 2005, at the Sabetha Community Hospital.
She was born March 1, 1922, on a farm southeast of Seneca, the daughter of Anthony J. and Christine Strathman Spielman. She attended Sts. Peter and Paul Schools and graduated from Sts. Peter and Paul High School in 1940.
Mrs. Lackey was a homemaker. In the early 1970s, she was employed by the Big B Grocery Store as a bookkeeper and clerk, retiring in 1994.
She was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church and St. Ann's Altar Society at the church.
She married Walter M. Lackey on Dec. 12, 1941, in Baltimore, Md., where he had gone to work in an aircraft factory to help the war effort. After he had served a year in the U.S. Navy, they returned to live in Seneca in 1946. He died Dec. 31, 1997.
Survivors include three sons, Richard Lackey, Danville, Ill., Glen Lackey, Wetmore, and Keith Lackey, Sabetha; two daughters, Judy Holthaus, Topeka, and Lynette House, Eudora; four sisters, Olivia Numrich, Shawnee Mission, Frances Robbins and Vera Cox both of Cheney, and Luella Hinton, Fayetteville, Ark.; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
A son, Jay Michael Lackey died Sept. 4, 1965. Two brothers, Leo J. Spielman and A.F. "Tony" Spielman; and a sister, Mary Murphy, also preceded her in death.
The family suggests memorials to the Sts. Peter and Paul School, Sabetha Community Hospital, Nemaha Valley Community Hospital, or Crestview Manor, sent in care of the Lauer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 124, Seneca 66538.
