Edith H. Metcalf Cordell

Funeral services for Edith H. Metcalf Cordell, 88, Lawrence, were Saturday, Sept. 24, at Warren-McElwain Mortuary, Lawrence. Burial was at Underwood Cemetery in Williamstown.
Mrs. Cordell died Tuesday, Sept. 20, at her home.
She was born Dec. 27, 1916, in Sarcoxie Township in Douglas County, the daughter of William Elton and Lillie Lischner Holey.
Mrs. Cordell was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church in Lawrence. She attended both Kansas University and Washburn University.
She worked as the clerk of Douglas County Selective Service Draft Board for 27 years until the dissolution of the draft. Later, she helped farm and was a homemaker.
She married James Metcalf on April 11, 1936, in Lawrence. He died in May 1948. She married O.W. "Bill" Cordell in Miami, Okla., in 1966. He died in 1983. Her companion of 10 years, Harold O'Brien died in 1994.
Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Schwarz, Lawrence, and Dolores "Dee" Henry, Camdenton, Mo.; a sister, Clovis Kirby, Lawrence; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A brother and an infant sister preceded her in death.
The family suggests memorial contributions to Hospice Care of Douglas County or Douglas County Visiting Nurses, sent in care of Warren-McElwain Mortuary, 120 W. 13th St., Lawrence 66044.
