Janice Hiatt Pence

Services for Janice Hiatt Pence, 69, Lawrence, were Tuesday, Sept. 6, at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church in Lawrence. Private family inurnment will be at a later date.
Ms. Pence died Wednesday Sept. 1, 2005, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital, after a long illness with metastatic carcinoid cancer.
She was born June 13, 1936, in Atlanta, Mo., the daughter of William O. and Artie E. Hiatt Loumaster. She graduated from Atlanta High School and attended Northeast Missouri State Teacher's College. She lived in Lawrence since 1961.
Ms. Pence was co-owner and operator of Pence Garden Center, the Flower Shoppe and Bridal Fashions by Jan until 1993. She was a longtime volunteer at the Lawrence Public Library. She was a member of the La Sertoma Club in Lawrence, Beta Sigma Phi, Altrusa International and the Red Hat Society, Lawrence Chapter.
She married Frederick Pence on May 11, 1957, in Burlington, Iowa. They divorced.
Survivors include a son, Eric John Pence, Eudora; three daughters, Maria Butler and Karla Patrick, both of Lawrence, and Shari Underwood, Colorado Springs; two sisters, Anna Nickell, Burlington, Iowa, and Bernice Kattchee, Berkeley, Calif.; and seven grandchildren.
The family suggests memorials to the Friends of the Lawrence Public Library or the American Cancer Society, sent in care of the Lawrence Funeral Chapel, 3821 W. Sixth St., Lawrence 66049.
