Broers takes first in Topeka drag race event
Eudora resident Roger Broers outlasted a field of about 50 racers in the Sportsman class of the 2006 Heartland Park Topeka E.T. Drag Race Series April 8 in Topeka to claim the championship.
Broers made it through seven rounds to get to the finals on Saturday and defeated Jim Nelson of Paxico to claim the top prize.
Nelson dialed in at 11.50 seconds and was under the index at 11.489 to give the win to Broers.
Broers dialed his 1988 Oldsmobile Cutlass at 12.59 seconds and crossed the finish line in 12.637 seconds.
Broers, who has been racing for about six years, made it to the quarterfinals on Sunday during the second event of the drag race series before bowing out of the competition.
Area sportsman racers compete for cash awards throughout the season and compete for track point championships and a chance to race during the NHRA Summit Racing Series Division V E.T. Finals, which will be Sept. 15 to 17 in Topeka.
The next rounds of the Heartland Park Topeka E.T. Drag Race Series will be April 22 and 23.
