Grant awarded to Douglas and Shawnee counties
The Corporation for National and Community Service has awarded Douglas and Shawnee counties a three-year, $300,000 grant to implement a Retired and Senior Volunteer Program serving both counties.
The award, announced Nov. 30 by the United Way of Greater Topeka, will fund a new collaboration between the Roger Hill Volunteer Center, a service of the United Way of Douglas County, and the United Way of Greater Topeka Volunteer Center.
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program assists seniors to identify and engage in rewarding volunteer opportunities based on skills, interests, life experience, geographic preference and time availability.
Funds for the program will be distributed beginning in January 2007, financing a three-person RSVP staff to implement the program in Lawrence, Topeka and surrounding cities.
