Baker to be host to honor band festival
Baker University will be host to the eighth annual Concert Honor Band Festival for area high school musicians Feb. 9 at Rice Auditorium.
High school band members from Baldwin City, Central Heights, Eudora, Fort Scott, Jefferson West, Louisburg, Marysville, Olathe Northwest, Osawatomie, Ottawa, St. Marys and Wellsville are scheduled to attend the festival.
Charles Woodward, former director of the Henderson County High School Band in Henderson, Ky., and founder and director of the Henderson Community Band, will conduct the bands and be a guest clinician.
Tuba soloist Deanna Swoboda, assistant professor of music at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Mich., also will perform with the bands.
The daylong event will end with a 7:30 p.m. concert, which will feature the Baker University Symphonic Winds under the direction of Raymond James Jr., director of bands at Baker University, and the high school honor band, directed by Woodward.
The concert is free and open to the public.
