Fund provides adoption assistance

February 2, 2006

The Jim Carr Memorial Fund for Adoption is accepting applications from families seeking assistance with the costs of adopting a child. One award of $1,000 will be made in 2006.

The fund was established at the Douglas County Community Foundation in 2002 to honor the late Jim Carr, a Lawrence firefighter and father of two adopted daughters.

Applicants must be Douglas County residents and must submit a home study compiled by a specially licensed social worker with their application.

Both domestic and international adoptions will be considered, as well as private adoptions. Single parents are eligible. Completed adoptions will not be considered.

The award will cover $1,000 of verifiable adoption costs including agency fee, country fee and orphanage donation. Grants will be sent directly to the agency facilitating the adoption.

The deadline for applications is March 1.
