Local student-athletes lauded by board
Activities Director Dave Durkin introduced four Eudora High School student-athletes to the Eudora Board of Education at its meeting Feb. 9 for recognition on recent achievements.
Freshman Emily Ballock and junior Brittney Graff were recognized at the Women's Sports Awards Celebration luncheon Feb. 1 at Crown Center.
The event was in conjunction with National Girls and Women in Sports Day. Each year, five local women are honored for the impact they have made within the community through sports and fitness as well as local female high school state champions.
Ballock won the class 4A state championship in the 300-meter hurdles. Graff won the state championship in cross country.
Senior Guy Kirby Montgomery was named one of this year's 10 KMBC-TV 9/HyVee scholars. He was awarded a trophy and a $1,000 scholarship. Footage and interviews were done Feb. 2 and the clip aired on the channel 9 newscasts Feb. 7 at 6 and 10 p.m.
Senior Megan Ballock was recognized Feb. 4 as one of 20 finalists in the Wendy's Heisman Scholar/Athlete Award for 2006. She received a bronze medal at a banquet at KU featuring Kendall Gammon as main speaker.
Megan Ballock was also recently named to the Lawrence Journal-World all-area academic first team.
