The all-area girls and boys track teams and the softball and baseball teams were selected recently by the Lawrence Journal-World sports staff and were based heavily on voting by area coaches and performances throughout the season. All area coaches had an opportunity to vote for first-team, second-team and honorable mention honors.

When Dan Kuhlman was nearing the often unwelcome milestone of his 50th birthday he found himself thinking about what he needed to do for himself when the day arrived. “I was going to turn 50,” Kuhlman, now 52, said. “I just thought I really wanted to be in the best possible shape I could be in.”

Sitting on a bucket in the Cardinals dugout, Mark Abel knows he’s seen it before. The walks, the missed signs and the missed plays at the plate have all been things the former Eudora baseball player has seen in bunches, and Saturday was no exception as the Cardinals took on the Hornets at the 3 and 2 Baseball Club of Johnson County. This time around, however, there was one thing that was different.

Despite the struggles, Eudora Parks and Recreation Director Bobby Arnold said, the 30-year-old pool still has an upside, of sorts. “It functions. Really, that might be the only thing now,” Arnold said. Although the building shows its apparent age with cracked concrete and worn machinery, it still serves the community, Arnold said. “But other than that, there’s not a lot of upside to it,” Arnold said.
