Museum events planned
As part of the "Year of the Museum," Watkins Community Museum of History is hosting two museum related programs for children during July.
Participants can bring their own collection and learn the "ABC's of Collecting" during Kids Collect from 2 to 3:30 p.m. July 7.
The program is free.
Museum staff will offer "Watkins: Top to Bottom" at 11 a.m. July 12.
Children between the ages of 7 and 14 can go on a behind-the-scenes tour of the museum. The tour will last one hour.
The program is free, however reservations are required.
The traveling exhibit "Those Who Came Before Us: Mexican Americans in Kansas, 1900-1950" will end Saturday at the Watkins Community Museum of History.
The exhibit explores the jobs, which brought most early Mexican workers, including sugar beet production and working on the railroads, to Kansas. The culture and traditions of Mexican Americans are also highlighted including fiesta, the Quinceanera and Las Posadas.
The museum is located at 1047 Massachusetts St., in Lawrence.
