It was not a game the Eudora soccer team and coach Matt Higgins expected to win. After losing the past five games, the Cardinals were in somewhat of a rut. That’s probably what made the De Soto win all the sweeter.

The game may have begun in sweat and excitement, but it ended in tears and defeat Friday night against Girard, when Eudora lost in the sectional round of the state tournament, 21-14. After a pristine season that saw Eudora reel off 11-straight wins, the Cardinal offense proved unable to bust through the Girard defense, disallowing anything more than 14 points for Eudora.

Eudora West Elementary School fifth-grader Matthew Jones won’t be alone in his condition anymore. Neither will his mother, Paula. Both have endured the strange looks stemming from Matthew’s alopecia areata –- a medical condition causing Matthew to lose his hair –- for too long. That’s why Paula worked to create Kansas’ first support group for people suffering from the same condition. The group will meet 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Eudora City Hall, 4 East 7th St.

There are no normal days for Eudora USD 491 Communications Director Kristin Magette. After four months, certain tasks like updating the district’s newly launched Web site or preparing research for an upcoming bond issue are routine, she said.

Mayor Tom Pyle followed through Monday on his promise to keep moving forward with a search to fill Eudora’s empty city council seat. Pyle officially announced the names of five candidates both he and councilwoman Lori Fritzel will interview next week for the position.
