The Kansas Press Association had its 115th Annual Convention April 19-21 in Topeka.
More than 80 Kansas newspapers competed in the association’s annual Awards of Excellence contest. Members of the Missouri Newspaper Association judged the entries.
The Eudora News competed in the non-daily division I category with circulation of 1,750 or less.

Eudora USD 491 School District officials conducted an early morning sweep and a “light lockdown” Thursday in response to an unspecified bomb threat called in to the Douglas County Dispatch, Superintendent Marty Kobza said.

The Eudora City Council accepted a blight study Monday by city engineering consultants Bucher, Willis & Ratliff, which deemed an area east of town unfit for development.
The blighted area encompasses all of Intech Business Park and the planned Deer Valley subdivision as well as 30 acres on the northeast side of 1400 Road.
The city’s bonding attorney, Gilmore and Bell, accepted the terms of the blight study, Eudora City Administrator Cheryl Beatty said.

The Eudora USD 491 Board of Education received a clearer view Monday of the possible cost of a fall 2008 bond issue.
DLR Group architect Kevin Greischar presented the board with what would be a $45 million question if the district includes everything it defined in an eight-tier list earlier in the year.

As member LaDonna Russell sees it, the Eudora Chamber of Commerce is in the middle of a rebirth.
“Everything we’re involved in represents a new look and feel for the chamber,” Russell said.
The changes are both in its look and in the programs it’s pursuing, she said.
“There’s really a push now for the chamber to be very active in the economic development of the community,” she said

Two pieces of an interlocal agreement that puts the Eudora Emergency Medical Service partially under city supervision came together Monday.
The Douglas County Commission and the Eudora City Council each accepted an agreement that would give the Eudora City Fire Department partial oversight of the Eudora Emergency Medical Service.
“I’m amazed at how fast this all came about,” Eudora City Fire Chief Randy Ates said. “I guess this was the correct timing. Everyone pulled at the right time, and it looks like this will happen.”

After shutting out Wellsville 15-0 and 18-0 in a doubleheader Thursday night and Anderson County 15-0 in the first game of a doubleheader Friday night, the Cardinals broke their almost-perfect streak by giving up one run to Anderson County in the second game, winning 8-1.

All it took was one close game against Wellsville for the Eudora softball team to really flex its muscles in the second game of a doubleheader last Thursday. But when all was said and done, the Cardinals went to bed that night with two more wins added to their record, finishing the first game 5-4 and the night cap 10-1.

Childcare provider Sherri Proffitt organized an art opening of sorts Monday.
Although the pieces are made of paper plates and construction paper and the exhibition spaces are more akin to pizzerias than gallerias, Proffitt helped find a way to show off the creative talent of local preschoolers.

A group of 19 Eudora High School seniors, juniors and sophomores were inducted into the Eudora High School Chapter of the National Honor Society during a ceremony April 23 at Eudora Middle School. A potluck dinner in the commons area of the school preceded the induction ceremony.
