Brothers look for big senior season
August 23, 2007
They actually don’t look as much alike as they used to. Eudora senior soccer mavericks Connor and Logan Hartpence have ruled the high school field together since they arrived as freshmen. For the first three years, they set themselves apart from the pack with aggressive, fast and skillful play. They set themselves apart from each other with different colored headbands — blue for the calmer, quieter head of Logan and red for the fire and finesse of offensive-minded Connor.
Senior class hopes to give program big-time kick
August 23, 2007
Three coaches in four years is never a good thing, new Eudora soccer coach Gunar Harmon said. But it’s not all bad, either. As the Cardinals prepare for a new season with yet another new coach, Harmon said his team of experienced seniors and eager underclassmen have what it takes to record the program’s best season.

Caucuses give Kansas options to primaries
August 23, 2007
Presidential politics have been an everyday item in the news for a year and debates seem as commonplace as NASCAR races. With all the attention, it’s difficult to remember the election still is more than 14 months in the future and the first primary about six months removed. That could be a sign that for the first time since 1952, neither an incumbent president or vice president is running, leaving a open field.

County service offers senior citizens freedom
August 23, 2007
Retirement didn’t sit well at first with Clark Goodwin. The former Trans World Airlines machinist moved to Lawrence six years ago and found he had more time on his hands than what he knew what to do with. “You go crazy really,” Goodwin said. He decided to find a job to keep himself busy. So, he traded his mechanic’s tools for a seat on a bus.
District makes do as classroom space shrinks
August 23, 2007
Some students at Eudora West Elementary School will be spending a little more time in the library this year. From Eudora USD 491’s perspective, that might not be such a good thing. Over the summer, the district built two new reading classrooms in the school’s library in order to accommodate growth.
Initial enrollment numbers cause no surprise
August 23, 2007
Through-the-door enrollment during the first week of classes at Eudora schools appears to be about what Eudora USD 491 officials predicted. The district released a statement Thursday pegging enrollment throughout the district at 1,411 students. The number shows an increase of 28 students from a total of 1,383 students from the 2006-2007 school year.

Four-year-old and family battle back from accident
August 23, 2007
The Foster house is full again. Their preschool business, Donna’s Little Bugs, has steadily taken on students. The family moves forward after a year of pain, stress and surprising recovery. Alexis, who nearly lost a foot in a lawn mowing accident in June 2006, like her family, is becoming whole again.

August 23, 2007
It’s not always easy being a Christian. The Rev. Darin Kearns of Hesper Friends Church learned that firsthand when he went with a group of missionaries to Nepal from June 26 to July 13. In Nepal, Christians sometimes face persecution, he said.

Cardinals labeled KVA’s Class 4A preseason No. 1
August 23, 2007
It was 10 months ago. It was a great season, a great run and a tremendous finish. It was the thing players and coaches dream about, and the kind of success that had maddeningly eluded the Eudora volleyball team in its two previous trips to the Class 4A state tournament.
