Girls to face Paola tonight
Haley Epperson led all scorers with 19 points as the Eudora girls basketball team beat Piper 75-59 Monday night in the first round of the 2007 Panther Invitational in Paola.
The win set up an 8:30 p.m. semi-finals showdown tonight with the tournament's host, Paola.
The Cardinals trailed 15-11 against Piper after the first quarter, but an intense full-court press and a scoring outburst from junior Bailey Scott quickly put Eudora in control in the second.
Scott, who finished with 12 points, scored one basket in the first quarter, then lobbed the ball over the defense from beyond the 3-point arc for a eye-popping assist to Epperson to tie the game at 15.
She stole the ball moments later and cashed in a layup to give the Cardinals a four-point lead, and hit the second of back-to-back Eudora 3-pointers to take a 25-15 lead.
Epperson came up big in the second half. Eudora lead by as many as 16 in the second quarter, but Piper rallied, cutting the gap to 12 at the half and five points midway through the third quarter.
Epperson scored two buckets on offensive rebounds and scored while drawing a foul twice in the second half, helping the Cardinals pull away again. Nikki Snider battled through foul trouble to add 14 and Emily Ballock scored 11. Kendal Abel also contributed 10 points.
Paola beat Turner 76-39 Monday to advance.
