High School choir ‘Sings it Forward’
The Eudora High School choir is getting into the giving spirit with a "Sing It Forward" food drive.
Choir classes are competing to see which class can collect the most with the goal of reaching a total of 3,000 canned food items. All items will be given to the food pantry at St. Paul United Church of Christ.
"We're trying to give back because the community has been so supportive of us and all of our trips," Eudora High School choir director Angela Yarnell said. "We're going to Orlando this year and we do so many fundraisers and we ask for so much support that we just thought that it would be great to do something in return."
The choir also will be having its first Alumni and Community Sing, which Yarnell said will become an annual event. The event will happen at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Eudora Middle School auditorium.
"It seemed like this would be a good year to start an annual tradition of having the seniors and anyone else come back at the holidays because usually the kids are home from college by then," she said. "It's something I've been wanting to do for a long time."
Those alumni or community members who wish to participate are asked to arrive at 6:30 p.m. to rehearse. They will be singing "Carol of the Bells" and "Somewhere in My Memory" with the choir at the end of concert.
Yarnell also asked that participants bring one non-perishable canned food item.
"Of course anyone who loves to sing is invited," Yarnell said. "I have some parents who are going to sing with their kids because they sang when they were in high school or they sing in their church choir and just want to be up on stage with their kids.
"We're trying to encourage more people singing in Eudora, that's our goal -- more singing more of the time -- and this seemed like a good way to make that happen."
