The Eudora Middle School chess team took to the boards Feb. 3 and came away with third-place team hardware in the Topeka Collegiate Chess Tournament. There were 38 competitors in the middle school division.
Those participating from Eudora were eighth-graders Hawley Montgomery, Kelby Foos, Tanner Sorenson, Dylan Litherland and Chris Patterson; seventh-graders Michael-Shane Baxter, Jared Ireland, Ken Johnson, Ryan Leary, Colin Forsberg, Brenna Bench and John Paul Beckwith; and sixth-grader Andrew Briery.
Leading as a team after four rounds, the EMS chess team hovered on the cusp of victory, but a tough sixth round found them finishing in third.
Montgomery was the highest finisher for EMS. He ended in fourth place after losing in the final round to the eventual champion.
Baxter (13th), Ireland (14th) and Foos (15th) rounded out those finishing in the top 20.
