Junior high basketball

January 11, 2007

The eighth-grade varsity basketball team traveled to Spring Hill Jan. 4 to tip off the 2007 season.

After trailing by four at halftime and by six after three quarters, the Cardinals used a suffocating defense to get back in the game in the fourth quarter and pull out a dramatic 42-40 victory.

The team traveled to Wellsville Saturday for a two-game tournament.

A sluggish start against Wellsville in game one led to a 15-point defeat. A poorly played first half both offensively and defensively put Eudora in a big half time hole. But, execution and effort in the second half allowed the Cardinals to climb back in it, before losing by 15.

In the second game, the Cardinals out-manned the Anderson County Bulldogs. Creating turnovers with defense and converting on the offensive end led the Cardinals to a big win.

  • The seventh-grade varsity boys basketball team ran into a buzz saw in its first game of the season Jan. 4, losing to Spring Hill 44-13. The Cardinals struggled the entire game on both the offensive and defensive sides of the court. Turnovers and missed layups contributed to the Cards demise.

Leading scorer for Eudora was Brennen Williams with seven points. Others scoring included David Pierce and Ryan Leary with two each and Lucas Becker and Carter Olsen with one apiece.

The team bounced back from its loss to Spring Hill by placing second in the Wellsville Invitational Saturday.

The Cardinals started off by playing host Wellsville. The boys jumped out to a 31-17 halftime lead.

The second half was a bit different, as the Cards were outscored 23-20, but held on for the 51-40 victory.

Williams led all scorers with a season high 27. Jared Ireland had six. Lucas Becker finished with four. Derek Webb, Cody Howard and Chris Pyle each had two.

In the championship game, the Cards faced rival Baldwin.

Two points separated the teams at half, and a scrappy Baldwin team forced late second-half turnovers that proved costly for the Cardinals. Baldwin went on to win the tournament, 38-30 as the final score.

Williams had eight and Webb, David Pierce, Ireland and Pyle each finished with two apiece.

  • A pesky Spring Hill defense, which caused 33 turnovers, proved too much Jan. 4 for the seventh-grade boys junior varsity basketball team.

The Cards struggled early with scoring, trailing 19-5 at half. Eudora was able to hold the Broncos to 12 in the second half while scoring 12 of their own, but their efforts fell short as they lost 31-17.

The Cards were led by Derek Higgins and Mike Hatton, each contributing eight points. David Colman scored one.
