First-ever state senior spelling bee

The Salina Senior Center and City of Salina Parks and Recreation 50 Plus program are co-sponsoring the first annual State of Kansas Senior Citizens Spelling Bee in October.

The spelling bee is open to any Kansas resident who is 50 years or older by Oct. 1, 2007.

The contest will take place at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 11 at the Bicentennial Center, 800 The Midway, Salina.

Judges will be Kansas U. S. Senator Nancy Kassebaum Baker, Max Falkenstien, the voice of the Kansas Jayhawks and Kansas House of Representative Josh Svaty.

Spectators are welcomed and encouraged.

There is a $5 entry fee, payable in advance.

Entry forms may be obtained online at www.salhelp.org/aging/spellingbee or by calling (785) 827-9818. Entry forms are due back by Sept. 14, 2007 to the Salina Senior Center 245 North Ninth, Salina 67401.

The grand prize will be a trip for two to the National Senior Citizens Spelling Bee competition in Cheyenne, Wyo., in June 2008, to compete against contestants from other states.
