East Central Cooperative meets
The regular meeting of the East Central Kansas Cooperative in Education Board of Directors took place June 12 at the Baldwin District Conference Room in Baldwin City.
Members present were Blaine Cone, Susan Rader, Ande Parks, Kenny Massey, Ardith Bell, Jim Martin, director Caren Lowe and clerk of the board Sue Martin. Massey had to leave the meeting early.
Two paraeducators were present at the meeting to present their reasons for the board to reconsider the 12-month pay option for paraeducators.
Following board discussion, Kenny Massey made a motion to approve the 12-month pay option with the following stipulations: It will be on a one-year trial basis; first year paraeducators will not be eligible; it will be based on a seven-hour day and the number of calendar days per district, including the six paid holidays; and there is no option to change back to hourly pay during the year.
Susan Rader seconded the motion and it carried 6-0.
Two certified staff members were present to represent staff in requesting a change in policy for all discretionary days. Following board discussion, Kenny Massey made a motion to change the five discretionary/seven sick day policy to all 12 days designated as discretionary days for a one-year trial basis. Jim Martin seconded the motion and it passed by a 6-0 vote.
Susan Rader made a motion to approve the following contracts for this year's extended school year: Sara Lindsay and Samantha Thibodeau, certified staff; Sherri Cunningham, paraeducator; Laura Phlipot, interpreter.
Ardith Bell seconded the motion. It carried by a 5-0 vote.
Susan Rader made a motion to approve the resignation of Deborah Murray, Eudora School Psychologist. Ardith Bell seconded the motion and it passed by a 5-0 vote.
Ande Parks made a motion to approve the resignation of Meghan Othick, Baldwin Speech Pathologist. Ardith Bell seconded the motion. It passed with a 3-2 vote.
Blaine Cone made a motion to approve the following contracts: Betsy Daniel, Baldwin PC IRR; Laura Davids, Wellsville ECH; Cathy Fitzgerald, Wellsville HS IRR; Janet Slaven, Eudora OT.
Ardith Bell seconded the motion and it carried by a 5-0 vote.
The budget and assessments were revised because of an increase in the year end categorical aid per teacher/paraeducator, an increase in the number of paraeducators needed for fiscal year 2008 and the increase in anticipated categorical aid per FTE for fiscal year 2008.
Ardith Bell made a motion to add 15 cents to the base pay for 2007-2008. Jim Martin seconded the motion and it passed with a 5-0 vote.
Rowe reported on the audit the state will be conducting regarding excess costs for students with disabilities.
