Obituary: Martina Hess

1916-2007

Funeral services for Martina Hess, 91, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Clinton Presbyterian Church in Clinton. Burial will follow in Clinton Cemetery.

Mrs. Hess died Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at Eudora Nursing Center.

She was born Jan. 26, 1916, in Lawrence, the daughter of David and Edna Ione Woodward Pugh. She attended school in rural Douglas County.

Mrs. Hess was a switchboard operator at Weaver's department store for 35 years and retired in 1991. She was the church organist at Clinton Presbyterian Church for 30 years, and was also a member of the church.

She married Harold L. Hodges. They divorced. She married Herman Hess on Jan. 21, 1956, in Osawatomie. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include a son, Charles Hodges and wife Margaret, Clinton; a daughter, Janet Mills and husband Charles, Lawrence; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hess was preceded in death by a brother, Charles David Pugh.
