Leadership needed to end energy impasse

In the 2006 Kansas House elections and in the months preceding the start of the legislative session in January, there was ambitious talk of developing a new energy policy for the state. Kansas Department of Health and Environment Secretary Roderick Bremby’s denial last October of permits to build two coal-fired electrical plants near Holcomb seems to have put an end to far-reaching action on energy policy. Instead, the session has become a contest between Gov. Kathleen Sebelius and a Republican dominated Legislature over the fate of the coal-fired plants.
Baseball blowout earns first win

On Friday, the Baldwin Relays were exciting to watch, even if they may have kept some people from making the start of the KU-Villanova game. It was the first track meet I’ve covered so far at any level and was not the slow-paced experience I’d heard about from other sports reports.

I am the first of my entire family to attend a four year university and to tell the truth I don’t know why it’s such a big deal. Now, do not get the idea college is anything like high school because it’s not, you have to work at everything you do. I’m not telling you this to try and scare you off but just know that college professors expect a lot more out of you than the high school teachers.

Baldwin meet offers stiff competition

y the looks of it, the 2008 season will be a roller coaster ride for coach Cara Kimberlin and her Cardinals. In one week Eudora has already cranked up to the top of the coaster, sweeping its first series, then came crashing down to the bottom by dropping games three and four.
City study proposes water quality upgrades

Although a study of the city of Eudora’s water system found no current pressing needs, it did suggest upgrades could be made to enhance quality and service. The water study done through BG Consultants to identify future needs of Eudora’s water system now is completed.
City codebook may outlaw pit bulls

The city of Eudora’s proposed new codebook has various breeds of pit bulls and bull dogs in its cross hairs. An updated version of the city’s codebook has been completed and after the Kansas Municipal League of Cities approves it, the measure most likely will go to the Eudora City Council for final approval in May.

Variety show

The Eudora annual variety show is set for 7 p.m. April 12 at Eudora Middle School. This year’s show will feature Eudora community youth singing, dancing and performing skits with special guest stars.

Eudora High School graduate Erin Katzfey was one of nearly 50 undergraduate students at Kansas State University who has earned a $1,000 stipend through the cancer research award program.
Diamond Club looking for sponsors

Single lot no longer enough for car show

The 20th Street Car Show, which formerly was known as Durkin’s Car Show, will take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The name change is an indication of growth, as Durkin’s Hardware owner John Durkin has seen it outgrow the parking lot in front of his store, located at 218 E. 20th St.
