Township fire department looking for new recruits

When Eudora Township Fire Chief Mike Baxter is called to a fire, the last thing he wants to worry about is whether or not there will be enough manpower to put out the blaze in a safe and timely manner. Unfortunately, that is the position in which he and the rest of the Township Fire Department find themselves.

Even while on Christmas vacation, Eudora Middle School English teacher and Student Council Adviser Carrie Jackson was thinking of activities for the school. One morning, inspiration struck and the warm coat drive at the middle school was born.

The Eudora gymnasium holds between 1,800 and 2,000 people. By my estimation, at both the girls and boys basketball games Monday and Tuesday night, about one-fourth of the seats were filled. That seems to be the norm this winter.

The Eudora eighth-grade varsity basketball team lost Monday night, falling to Spring Hill 34-12. The Cardinals played good defense throughout the game to keep it c lose, but couldn’t generate enough offense to make a run late in the game.

The Lawrence Arts Center, 940 New Hanpshire St., will open its doors from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday for the annual Souper Bowl Fundraiser. For a minimum donation of $10, customers receive one serving of soup, bread, drink and can take home a hand made bowl.

Narrow victory helps Cardinals even record

It was rocky-going throughout the first three quarters of Eudora’s Tuesday home game against Metro Academy. A strong fourth quarter vaulted the Cardinals past the Mavericks, 44-42, however, giving Eudora a two-game winning streak heading into its road clash Friday with Louisburg.
