Canoe race postponed once again
For the second consecutive week, the canoe race from Eudora to De Soto has been postponed because of safety concerns associated with the high river level on the Kaw.
Race organizer Darrel Zimmerman has tentatively rescheduled the race for Saturday, July 12, pending lower river levels.
Zimmerman said he'd like the river stage to be 10 feet or below before the race takes place, and level as of Tuesday night were around the 14 feet mark.
River stages can be checked at http://ga2.er.usgs.gov/kswater.
Pre-race registration will be at 9 a.m. at the city of Eudora boat ramp on the Wakarusa River. The race will start at that point at 10 a.m. and travel 12 miles downstream to the De Soto boat ramp on the Kaw north of 79th Street.
The entry fee for a two-person team is $20, of which $2 will be donated to Friends of the Kaw.
The winning team will receive the registration fees and a traveling trophy.
