Residents of Eudora will become well acquainted with orange construction cones this summer and into next fall as work begins not only on the downtown revitalization project but the main entry to the city. Douglas County Public Works Director Keith Browning notified Eudora city officials late Thursday afternoon of a construction project on the Church Street bridge over Kansas Highway 10. The project will include some surface improvements with work on the embankment and approaches to the overpass
Horsethief race to benefit cross country team

Timing makes grant’s success more meaningful

The announcement last week that Eudora USD 491 was awarded a $745,000 safe schools/healthy students initiative federal grant that is renewable for up to four years had special significance as it came one day after Don Grosdidier took over the reins of the district as superintendent with the departure of Marty Kobza.

City feels budget crunch

Eudora City Administrator Cheryl Beatty presented city council members with a tough choice at a budget workshop last week. The council could raise the mill levy four mills for 2009 or limit the mill levy increase to two mills and cut jobs or programs, the city administrator said.

The Eudora High School baseball program will offer a camp for students in kindergarten through eighth grade from 8 a.m. to noon July 14 and 15 at EHS baseball field.
Wrestling camp set

Cardinal Wrestling Camp will be July 14 through July 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Eudora Middle School for students entering fifth through 12th grades.
Football camp

The 2008 Cardinal Football Camp will be July 21 through July 25 at the Eudora Middle School practice field. First through fourth-graders meet from 8:15 to 9:45 a.m. each day. Fifth and sixth-graders meet from 10:15 a.m. to 12 p.m. Ninth through 12th-graders meet from 6 to 8 p.m.
DEBA tries to stay positive during construction

It’s going to be inconvenient, but the results will be worth the inconvenience. That was the message given to members of the Downtown Eudora Business Association July 2 during a preconstruction meeting.
USD 491 receives $3 million grant

New Eudora USD 491 Superintendent Don Grosdidier had a great second day on the job when the district received a four-year, $3 million grant Wednesday from the U.S. Departments of Education, Justice and Health and Human Services. The grant was part of $74 million in grants awarded to 27 different states as part of the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Initiative. USD 491 was the only school district in the state of Kansas to receive the grant.

Monday night’s 7-on-7 passing league finales saw Eudora pick up another pair of victories, which brought its final record to 5-2-1. While impressive, coach Gregg Webb said he didn’t expect to learn a lot about his team during the four weeks of the league.

The attention span of a 4-year-old boy or girl may be a difficult thing to keep, especially when out on a baseball field. The solution? A relatively new game called blastball, and it’s a hit with Eudora’s youth.

KU honors USD 491 teachers

The School of Education at Kansas University honored EHS Assistant Principal and Technical Education Center Director Ron Abel, EHS and EMS family science teacher Peggy Claggett, EHS science teacher Bonnie Daigh and EMS Athletic Director and physical trainer Phil Katzenmeier with certificates recognizing 25 years or more of service to education in Kansas.

5 years ago FROM THE EUDORA NEWS July 2003 Eudora Planning Commission members decided a 190-foot monopole cell phone tower in the city didn’t have such a nice ring to it at a meeting July 2, when the Commission didn’t recommend approval for the AT&T project.
