- Although Lawrence Memorial Hospital has hired an architect, they will not move forward with construction of a primary care facility until the City of Eudora’s lawsuit with Douglas County Rural Water District No. 4 has been resolved. The Eudora Planning Commission during an April 1 meeting decided to allow LMH a one-year extension of the preliminary plat for the 10,000-square-foot facility it plans to build on the southeast corner of the Kansas Highway 10 interchange.

- Back Snack program will be welcome in recession

- Last month, Eudora USD 491 Superintendent Don Grosdidier told the school board the district had applied to bring the Back Snack program to Eudora. The program started in the Kansas City metropolitan area in 2004 is organized by the food bank Harvesters. It provides food on weekends to some students on free and reduced lunch.

- Eudora Parks and Recreation Director Tammy Hodges is getting ready for spring and summer. On a typical summer day, about 200 to 300 people use the community center, while about 250 people will use the aquatic center.

- Scott Hopson unseated incumbent mayor of Eudora Tom Pyle by nearly 200 votes Tuesday, garnering 464 votes compared to 277 votes for Pyle. Jean Farmer finished with 46 votes.

- Eudora High School instructor Erik Peltzman didn’t initially want to be a teacher. In fact, he didn’t even want to go to college. But after a talk with his father, he decided to go to college and become a pediatrician because he wanted his work to make a difference in the lives of others. Though he didn’t become a doctor, he has made a difference.

- April 2004 • Staff Sgt. Kurt Hopson of the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division (Big Red One) was serving in Balad, Iraq, north of Baghdad. Hopson was overseeing 10 soldiers working perimeter security. Hopson began his one-year tour in Iraq in February.
