KMBC, KCWE return to Sunflower Broadband lineup

January 30, 2009

— KMBC and KCWE are back.

Sunflower Broadband and the two stations and their parent company — Hearst-Argyle Television Inc. — have reached an agreement that allows Sunflower to carry both televisions on its cable system, serving Lawrence and other communities in northeast Kansas.

Sunflower subscribers can find KMBC, an ABC affiliate, on channel 9 and in high definition on channel 200. KWCE, a CW affiliate, is carried on channel 17 and in high definition on channel 206.

The channels were switched off Sunflower’s television lineup after a retransmission agreement expired at the beginning of the year.

Both sides previously had worked out agreements with other stations, cable operators or satellite TV providers. But the two sides could not come together on how much money Sunflower should pay Hearst-Argyle and the two stations for retransmission authority.

The companies’ joint announcement of the agreement did not include details of the new agreement.

“Our renewed partnership with KMBC and KCWE means Sunflower subscribers will continue to receive quality programming from all of the Kansas City area stations,” said Rod Kutemeier, Sunflower’s general manager.

Sunflower is owned by The World Company, which also owns the Journal-World.
