- Longtime philanthropist and volunteer for the Relay for Life Marilyn Laws Porter, 72, died of cancer Monday at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Laws Porter for 15 years had been an organizer of the event that raises awareness and money for the American Cancer Society.

- We received the sad news Tuesday that Marilyn Laws Porter died after a near two-year battle with cancer. There is greater sadness in that because Laws Porter was a cancer fighter long before she was diagnosed with the disease

What do you think about a proposed ban on smoking in public places such as restaurants, bars and workplaces?
As much as I hate government interfering with our lives, I love the smoking ban. Going out in Lawrence is so nice without smelling cigarette smoke at your table while eating.
